Spanning

The early distant edifice defines
the land from bank to bank.
The fields upon its back
reside beyond its lofty parapets;
it holds the sky alone above
as it strides the cyclic waters.
The peopled village, cuddled beneath,
views history from its doorstep;
every stone a reminder of tragedy
when, doomed, the train splintered
its hapless wooden forbear.
From here to there,
bridging from today into tomorrow,
unknown venture
holds within its gift
joy or sorrow
in a mystery.
