photo: Barn Owl

With these wings,
these beauteous pennants ,
stroke and counter stroke
are silent cushions
for treading sky-borne paths.
Through these eyes
night vistas become legible -
mapping woodland with serene precision;
gauging target,
choosing trajectory.

But all is not beauty
for talon death is crimson hue
and silent stealth mixes with distress
in the haunting of the night gatherer.

There is no litigation here for ‘not fit for purpose’.

You present both sides of the power of these unusual (and unusual looking!) things.

God's interesting and amazing creatures have a lot to teach us about God's purpose, wisdom, provision, grace and power, don't they?! Beautifully written, Keith!
