Dawn coming late

Dawn comes late
to the marl lake,
shielded by the weight
of chalk bastions
from early sorties.

Dawn comes late;
it doesn’t break here
but tumbles in its rising
like a morning psalm,
chanted by fieldfares.

Yawning awake,
the lake shines its face
to the tardy sun,
its surface rhythming
in the waking breeze.

Though I am alone
in witness
this is not loneliness
but soulitude.

Come the morning

Christmas (Come the morning)

Come the morning
sparkled bright and clear
when drear night turns away.
Come the morning
cloudless with angels,
new as fresh snow,
guiltless.
Come the morning
unspoiled, unbroken,
unambiguous
before the bigamy
of disparate ideals.
Come the morning
with the clarity
of freshly sprung water.
Come the morning
smelling of newborn.
Come the morning
and the gentle cries
of the child.
Come the morning.

Dawn

The glistened jewelling of sunlight
paints its dappled sparkle
on the softly breathing sea.
Dawn draws back the curtain
and day seeps in
playing gently on cloudy pillows
tugging at the sheet of night.
Glittered lights ride the ripples
as they jostle in their journey
into morning.
Another day begins.

at the stones

timeless gaps
and ancient pathways
shadowed prayers
and festal songs

chanting ghosts
call sunray guests
morning delivers
its mutant light

virgin dawn
treads the day softly
a sacrifice
in the making

A coven of three

A coven of three

3am: in the gentle breeze of the garden
escaping the clam of sweat
and the calm of cleep.
Me, the familiar cat and the whim of God -
a coven of three within the cloak of night.
The smoked-glass whisper of the moon
occasionally breeching the gossip of clouds;
the caress of coolness
charming away the night's oppression.

Whose soul are you cat ?
Black and white guard companion at my feet
on the parched summer-grass.

3.42am: the embryo of day.
Breaking of song - a blackbird's bidding prayer
long before the sun lays down its carpet.
Dangerous trees still cling
to their shadowy nakedness
postponing their morning dresses.

4.00am: the early shift begins.
Choristers on roofs and branches
as the genesis of day
begins its pastel revelation.
