The Downs on a bank holiday afternoon

The hill grips them;
in an ascent accent
it speaks to
their breathless clambering.
High as their kites,
children gamble their gamboling
against gravity and incline,
gathering grass stain bruises
to their new jeans.

Despite the cold,
layers defoliate
at the peak,
the warmth
of inactivity
catching up
with the discard of boots.

Lengthening shadows
foretell the drowning of the sun
beyond the arc of view
in its descent,
and closing time -
a stampede to the car park coral
where wild horsepower
awaits.
