The park awakens

Morning’s muted greeting,
heavy on branches,
greyed with a shadow
of unshriven dusk,
clasps the ground
in a moist embrace.
Birds escape its grip,
seeking the aboveness
of warmer air,
heart-beating the sky
with their pulsing flight.

The day will emerge
from its gloom
to breach the haze
and glaze the land
with its sunlight,
but that’s for later
when its tardy brightness
is strengthened
by trajectory.
