9. Lindisfarne Castle

In the grey mist of morning
the abbey’s craggy, latter-day, twin
assaults the sky,
while at its feet
daily skirmishes
of a salty army
make little ground.

Pilgrims attend,
their envious prayers,
ignoring reality
and the tidal moat
that daily cuts
the umbilical causeway.
