During the major covid virus lockdown in 2020 we were invited to 'clap for the NHS' at 8pm on Thursdays. We decided to augment this by following the clap with a couple of songs from our doorstep.
Doorstep Band
Heroes all, who spend their care
on the ragged infantry
who fall on the battlefield of virus.
In comradeship we clap our hullabaloo
and sing our chorus
for the unsung.
Throughout the town,
in street and cul-de-sac,
echoed claps ring,
calling the faithful
into the bosom of gratefulness.
Handbells clank with glad tongues,
drums heart-beat out,
and the kitchen utensil percussion
town-cry the evening prayer.
Neighbours smile across fences
shouting hellos
as friendships form
where smallest nods
had been the norm.
A virus of comaraderie
walks the noisy streets.
