'poems from the pit'
The new book from Keith Wallis is based on his photographs and poems regarding the Houghton Regis chalk quarry wild life reservation. Designated as an SSSI this is a former chalk quarry which supplied the cement works - a major employer in the locality from the 1890's to 1971. Whilst there is some reference to its former life, this collection is largely inspired by its new role as a nature reserve. When the industry ceased in 1971 it left a number of 'Marl' lakes, one of which is the deepest chalk marl in the UK. The reserve is administered by The Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire and is at a very early stage of its development as a wildlife reserve. The aptly named Rebecca Pitman is a 'Reserves Officer Chalk Grasslands Bedfordshire' and is the lead person locally.
