Grandstand is the garden bench
as the teams play out -
shadows on the lawn.
Either side, in the dug-out and beyond
opposing supporters
expose the colours of their clans.
On the right
the daffodils
trumpet sunshine
in their yellow strip.
On the left
crocus,
royal purple petals open
gape in yawning silence.
The
season is ending
and relegation looms,
for now each side is fading,
neither side
will further their promotion.
Sinking into the earth
next year's resurrection
will come
in its time.
And daffodil and crocus
will return to cheer
Spring's season of novelty.
