I have played and listened
to hearts with strings attached
soul touched by the fleeting moments
ambushed by a tear or two.
But friends, in harmony,
making music with their lives
are beyond mere acquaintances
and the best friends by far.
I have greeted dawns with music,
welcomed the requiem of night,
spent days on rocks and rolling
or sounding silence
as the sun goes down.
But solos become monotone
and lack a camaraderie of joy
that a multitude of strings
and the rhythm of laughter brings.
And I long for an assurance
that we’ll play beyond our span
with friends we shared these stages with
when the journey there began.
