Children should guard my soul,
not flag-waving zealots
nor militia armed with blood,
not politicians with their ‘manyfestos’
not crowds in their many-numbered anonymity.
Children should guard my soul
for they have not wings,
nor mast-nailed colours;
and they do not live in zoos
but merely visit.
Children should guard my soul,
they see with unfettered vision -
uncontaminated by finance
or the price of shares.
Children should guard my soul
because love
is in their eyes.
