A walking cane and an outsize hat:
‘Darby and Joan’
in the fancy dress queue,
wondering if age will donate
the need for a cane
and the disguising benefit
of headwear.
Clowns and pirates,
Mrs Mop and Peter Pan,
prepare for the showing off
promenade along the High Street.
Half a century later
the clown never was a clown
(funny that),
and the pirates stayed ashore
except for holidays abroad.
The Peter Pan didn’t stay young
but succumbed to age
and Mrs Mop rose above
that station.
We were young once,
we have the memories
unless the time thieves
have stolen them
in the dance of aging.
