Sun setting

Sun setting

Another day settles restwards.

Rusted fencing, sentry to the suns departure,
a discarded remembrance of former glory,
leans, forlorn, against thinning light.

Final thrusting rays stab the onset of darkness
knowing the battle is lost
to time’s marching melancholy.
Another day slips beyond the horizon
to fight time afresh
on another battlefield
different hills
new vistas.

This today reaches its cremating departure
a red gold flurry of changing darkling hues.
Birdsong fades as the winged singers beak their breasts
saving their music for another concerto
when they’ll beckon light into another today
on this battlefield
these hills
this vista.
